It is a great pleasure for us to announce the winners of the “Saramago through the Lens” photo contest: Jung Ui Lee, Liliia Kucher, Marko Stojanovic and Yvailo Yorgov.
We would like to thank you for submitting your work in our contest. This project, which arose with the aim of boosting the work of emerging photographers who love Saramago’s literature, had a huge turnout, including works by renowned photographers, which greatly congratulates and honors us.
We will contact the winning photographers as soon as possible with more information.
Follow us on social media to keep up with the news about the exhibition of the winning photographs, which will take place in Novi Sad from the 16th of November.
This contest is organised by Instituto Camões, in collaboration with Belgrade Photo Month Festival.
Conditions for Entry
The open call is open to anyone of any nationality, professional or amateur, born before 1st January 2004. However, an entry may be rejected should the sponsoring organisation or its agent find that the entry does not conform to the exhibition rules and conditions. There are no restrictions as to subject matter except as outlined in the rules and definitions of specific sections, or otherwise stipulated by the laws of the Republic of Serbia or other countries where the exhibition will take place.
Entries must originate as photographs (image-captures of objects via light sensitivity) made by the entrant on photographic emulsion or digitally. By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant declares the work as their own (pseudonyms are not permitted). The entrant thus permits the sponsors to reproduce all or part of the submitted material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the exhibition. This also may include low-resolution posting of the material on a website.
No member of the organization or their relatives can participate.
The exhibition assumes no liability for any misuse of copyright. Images may be altered, either electronically or otherwise, by the maker.
As part of the celebration of the centenary of José Saramago, it is our intention to propose the creation of an international photographic competition, which aims to establish a link between the author’s narratives, that have been translated into more than forty languages, and the imagination of his readers. Thus, in this creative process, which unites literature and photographic art, we propose that participants capture their interpretations of Saramago’s works with a lens. If in literature words are transformed into images, which images will have generated the words written by the Portuguese Nobel laureate around the world?
Choose a book by Saramago that has impressed you the most for any reason and do your own interpretation through the lenses of your camera.
In short, it is our goal to bring to the world the images that best represent the work of Saramago.
Participating photographers, amateurs and professionals, must present a set of works consisting of three to six original photographs that have never won any photo contest, indicating the work of José Saramago by which they were inspired and which they intend to portray.

Special Information for the Winners & Participants in the Exhibitions
The winners and the participants in the exhibition will be requested to send the selected photographs as high-resolution images no later than five days after the date of notification. Otherwise, there is no obligation on the part of the organisers to print the work for the exhibition.
This project will have two parallel paths that we will call international and local. We have appointed a jury made up of: Ana Matos (Granddaughter of José Saramago, founder and artistic director of Galeria das Salgadeiras). Cláudio Garrudo (Photographer, editor, cultural producer and founder of “Série Ph” that publishes books on photography). David Pujadó (Photographer and Director of Belgrade Photo Month Festival). Sofia Marinho, (Instituto Camões and professor of Portuguese at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia). This team will evaluate all projects presented.
This competition will culminate in the production of a series of exhibitions to be held in November 2022, the month in which Saramago would have turned 100 years old. This set of exhibitions, which aims to celebrate the writer’s life and work around the world, is part of a main exhibition opening in Novi Sad on 16/11/2022 and will be part of the official programme of Belgrade Photo Month Festival, that will present all the awarded works in Belgrade on 5/5/2023 At the same time, it is our intention that an exhibition will be held in Lisbon. Each of the three international winners will receive a prize according to their place in the rankings. These prizes will be €800, €400 and €300. The local winner will receive €300. Each participant can win only one prize. The organisation reserves the right to declare any prize void in the event that the quality of the proposals is not sufficient.
